Yunnan Highlands: 12 Days

A 12-day route through Dali, Shaxi, Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Shangri-La with a gradual rise in altitude and a mix of towns and hiking.

Updated Aug 2, 2026 8 min read

This route follows northwest Yunnan from the Erhai basin toward the Tibetan plateau. The order matters: beginning in Dali and Lijiang gives your body more time to adjust before Shangri-La and keeps Tiger Leaping Gorge on the natural path north.

Route overview

  • Days 1 to 3: Dali
  • Days 4 to 5: Shaxi and Shibaoshan, covered in the Dali guide
  • Days 6 to 8: Lijiang
  • Days 9 to 10: Tiger Leaping Gorge, covered in the Lijiang guide
  • Days 11 to 12: Shangri-La

Who this route suits

Choose it for historic towns, mountain landscapes, ethnic culture, and one optional overnight hike. It is less suitable for travelers who dislike changing hotels or who need step-free access throughout. You can remove Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shaxi to create a much easier rail-based route.

Day-by-day plan

Days 1 to 3: Dali

Begin with Dali Old Town and Chongsheng Temple, then spend a day along the Erhai Ecological Corridor and in Xizhou. Use the third day for Cangshan, Weishan, or a slower lakeside route.

Dali Old Town is convenient but heavily commercialized. Give more time to the Catholic church, local markets, Xizhou, and the west-bank villages rather than remaining on the busiest section of Fuxing Road.

Day 4: Dali to Shaxi

Travel north by road to Shaxi. The town’s conservation work and smaller scale make it a stronger overnight stop than a hurried photo break. Walk the old market square and lanes after the day visitors leave.

Day 5: Shibaoshan to Lijiang

Visit Shibaoshan for its historic grottoes and temples, then continue by road to Lijiang. This is easier with a prearranged car or shared transfer because Shaxi is not on the railway.

Days 6 to 8: Lijiang

Spend one day in Lijiang Old Town and Black Dragon Pool, one day around Baisha, Shuhe, and Yuhu, and one day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain if conditions and tickets allow.

Lijiang Old Town is a World Heritage site but also the most commercialized stop on this route. Early mornings and the smaller settlements north of town provide a calmer counterweight.

Days 9 to 10: Tiger Leaping Gorge

Hike from Naxi Yage toward Tea Horse Guesthouse and Halfway Guesthouse on the first day. Continue past Longdong Waterfall toward Tina’s Guesthouse on the second, then transfer onward to Shangri-La.

The gorge also works as a road stop between Lijiang and Shangri-La if you do not want the overnight trail. Upper Tiger Gorge is easier to access and suitable for a short visit, but it does not replace the high-trail experience.

Days 11 to 12: Shangri-La

Keep the first afternoon gentle. Walk Dukezong Old Town and avoid strenuous activity immediately after arrival. Use the final full day for Songzanlin Monastery and Napa Lake, or choose Pudacuo if you prefer landscapes to town time.

Shangri-La offers an accessible introduction to Tibetan culture without entering the Tibet Autonomous Region. Treat monasteries and religious practice with the same respect you would give an active place of worship elsewhere.

Transport strategy

Rail links Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La. Shaxi and Tiger Leaping Gorge require road transport. The most coherent trip therefore combines trains for the major cities with a shared car, bus, or arranged transfer for the two intermediate stops.

Easier and longer versions

  • 8 days: Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La by rail; remove Shaxi and the gorge hike.
  • 10 days: Keep either Shaxi or Tiger Leaping Gorge, not both.
  • 16 days or more: Add Weishan, Meili Snow Mountain, or Yubeng. Yubeng requires its own hiking block and should not be squeezed into the final two days.
