Southwest Mountains and Cities: 14 Days

A two-week Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Chongqing, and Zhangjiajie route balancing pandas, mountain parks, urban food, and dramatic landscapes.

This route connects four of inland China’s strongest destinations. It has more transport than the East China itinerary, so fourteen days is a sensible minimum rather than an invitation to add more stops.

Route overview

Who this route suits

Choose it for a first inland trip focused on landscapes, regional food, and large cities. It involves repeated changes in elevation, long park days, and several transport modes. Travelers who want a slower holiday should choose three of the four destinations.

Day-by-day plan

Days 1 to 3: Chengdu

Visit the panda base early on the first full day, then spend the afternoon around Wenshu Monastery or the old-city neighborhoods. Use the second day for People’s Park, Wuhou Shrine, and a teahouse. Keep the third for Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng, or remain in the city for food and museums.

Chengdu is the easiest place on this route to organize onward tickets and recover from the international journey.

Days 4 to 6: Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong

Use the new rail connection toward Jiuzhaigou, then take the bus waiting outside the station to the park area. Give Jiuzhaigou one complete day and avoid placing an onward journey that evening. Use the second full day for Huanglong if altitude, weather, and seasonal access are suitable.

The numbered highlights on the Jiuzhaigou map should take priority when time is short. The park is large enough that trying to walk every branch can reduce rather than improve the day.

Days 7 to 9: Chongqing

Continue to Chongqing, usually reconnecting through the Sichuan rail network. Spend one day around Jiefangbei, Shibati, Hongyadong, Chaotianmen, and Huguang Guild Hall. Use the next for Liziba, the Three Gorges Museum, Ciqikou, or a slower food-focused day.

Keep Dazu Rock Carvings or Wulong as an optional third day, not an automatic addition. Both require substantial time outside the center.

Day 10: Chongqing to Zhangjiajie

Treat this as a transfer day. Choose rail or a flight based on the current schedule rather than forcing an inconvenient direct connection. Stay near Zhangjiajie city for Tianmen Mountain or near the East Gate for the National Forest Park.

Days 11 to 14: Zhangjiajie

Give the National Forest Park two days. Use one for the high viewpoints around Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, and another for Huangshizhai and Golden Whip Stream from the South Gate. Reserve a separate day for Tianmen Mountain.

The final day can hold the Grand Canyon glass bridge with Baofeng Lake or Yellow Dragon Cave. Travelers interested in via ferrata can consider Qixing Mountain; those seeking only another viewpoint can skip it.

Transport strategy

The Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou section is now rail-based, but Jiuzhaigou still requires a station-to-park bus transfer. Chongqing and Zhangjiajie are connected within the wider rail and air network, though the best same-day option changes. Book the long legs first, then fit city days around them.

Shorter versions

  • 10 days: Remove Jiuzhaigou or Zhangjiajie. Keeping both produces too many transfer days.
  • 12 days: Skip Chengdu’s day trip and Chongqing’s outer sights.
  • Nature-first: Use Chengdu only as a gateway, then give the saved day to Jiuzhaigou or Zhangjiajie.
