Getting there
Fast trains connect Chengdu with Leshan Station (乐山站) and Emeishan Station (峨眉山站). Use Leshan Station for the Giant Buddha and Emeishan Station for Mount Emei. Buses and taxis connect both stations with their visitor areas.

1. Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛)
The 71-metre seated Buddha was carved into a red sandstone cliff at the confluence of three rivers. Work began in the 8th century, and the finished statue remains the largest stone Buddha in the world.

What to see
- The clifftop view: Look down over the Buddha’s head and the meeting rivers from the temples and paths above.
- The Nine-Turn Staircase (九曲栈道): Descend the steep cliff path to the statue’s feet when it is open.
- The river view: A sightseeing boat provides the clearest complete frontal view and requires less walking.
Caution
The cliff staircase can have long queues and many steep steps, especially on weekends and public holidays. The boat is faster and easier, but it does not include the temples around the statue.
2. Mount Emei (峨眉山)
Mount Emei is one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. Its long route rises from temples and subtropical forest to the Golden Summit (金顶), where cloud seas and sunrise views appear when the weather cooperates.
What to see
- Golden Summit (金顶): The mountain’s signature high viewpoint, reached with scenic buses, a cable car, and some walking.
- Baoguo Temple (报国寺): A convenient introduction near the mountain base.
- Wannian Temple (万年寺): An important historic temple on the middle slopes.
- Forest paths: Longer routes connect temples through dense forest, but distances and elevation changes are substantial.
Planning
Allow a full day for a summit-focused visit and longer for meaningful hiking. Stay near Baoguo Temple for easy access to base services, or overnight higher on the mountain for sunrise. Keep food secured and avoid displaying snacks around monkeys.

On Day 1, take an early train to Leshan, visit the Giant Buddha, then continue to Emeishan and stay near the mountain. On Day 2, start early for the Golden Summit and return to Chengdu by evening train. Add another night if you want temple walks rather than a transport-heavy summit visit.
